The sleeper train between Cairo and Luxor is one of Egypt's great travel experiences. This 6-day Cairo Luxor tour is built around it, turning your overnight journey into part of the adventure rather than just a transfer.
Start in Cairo with two of the ancient world's most recognizable landmarks: the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza. Spend the afternoon inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, where the complete Tutankhamun collection occupies an entire wing. In the evening, board your overnight sleeper train south toward Luxor — waking up in Upper Egypt as the sun rises over the Nile.
Two full days in Luxor, the world's greatest open-air museum, cover both banks of the river. On the East Bank, walk through the towering hypostyle hall of Karnak Temple Complex — the largest religious structure ever built — then explore the mythologically rich Luxor Temple at dusk. Cross the Nile to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, where Egypt's most powerful pharaohs were entombed in elaborately carved rock chambers, followed by the Terraced Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut.
Board the overnight sleeper train back to Cairo and spend your final day in the city's oldest quarters — the Coptic Cairo churches, monasteries, and alleyways that predate Islam by centuries, followed by the sensory labyrinth of Khan El Khalili Bazaar.
